When the Lockpick Kit Doesn’t Show Up: Making Movie Props on the Fly

In the world of indie filmmaking, things rarely go exactly as planned — and sometimes that’s where the real creativity begins.

We were gearing up to film a key scene for Word and Deed involving a lockpicking kit — a prop meant to show up on camera in an important moment in the storyline. The only problem? The kit we ordered didn’t arrive on time. Delayed in shipping, stuck in limbo, and nowhere near our set.

What do you do when the prop you need just… doesn’t exist yet?

You make it.

With time running out and filming just days away, we had to roll up our sleeves, grab what we could find, and build a realistic lockpick kit from scratch, one that would look convincing on camera and hold up through multiple takes.

Want to see how we did it?
We filmed the process and shared it as an exclusive behind-the-scenes video for our subscribers. From last-minute runs to the hardware store to carefully crafting a believable on-screen prop, you’ll get an inside look at how indie filmmakers turn problems into creative wins.
